A Collinsville man with a white jumpsuit, black sideburns, gyrating hips and Southern charm is making history this summer.

Bill Cherry is one of 25 semifinalists in the national Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest. It's the first such competition sponsored by Elvis Presley Enterprises.

'I don't overdo it or underdo it (on stage),' said Cherry, 42. 'I try to be as much like Elvis as I can be. I don't make fun of anything. For me, it really is a tribute.'

Cherry will travel to Memphis, Tenn., in August to compete in the Ultimate Elvis semifinals and possibly the finals. He won a preliminary roundagainst seven other tribute artists June 15 at Stoneridge Amphitheater in Camdenton, Mo., near Lake of the Ozarks. Read more
